William
Ramage, born in Shreveport, Louisiana
on August 27, 1933 was raised in Dallas, Texas. In 1950 he entered
The University of Texas in Austin and graduated in 1954 with a B.
A. in English. He was signed to a stock contract at RKO
Studios and appeared in several films including "THE CATTLE
QUEEN OF MONTANA" with Ronald Reagan and Barbara Stanwyck and
"THE CONQUEROR" with John Wayne and Susan Hayward. The
still photographer at RKO, Ernie Bachrach, felt Ramage had modeling
potential and called John
Engstead, a famed portrait and fashion photographer, in Los
Angeles.
After
signing with Emmeline Snively, the maven of fashion model agents
there, Ramage's career as a model took off, and he soon was also
signed by Anita Colby in New York as well. Colby had started her
own agency in New York after years as the nation's top fashion model.
She was known as "The Face." She was the sister of another
famous model, Francine Counihan.
Ramage
worked for several years as America's top male model. He also worked
as a television actor in Hollywood on many shows of the late 1950's
and 1960's such as "Playhouse 90," "Climax,"
and the soap opera, "The
Brighter Day." He also worked on "Sugarfoot,"
"Cheyenne," "Surfside Six," "Hawaiian Eye,"
Bourbon Street Beat," and others. In 1966 he starred in "A
TASTE OF FEAR," a feature film, shot in England and Italy.
While acting was a goal of Ramage's, his stardom was in modeling.
He
is retired now. He graduated with an M. A. in English from The University
of Southern California and later, Western State School of Law in
Fullerton, California. He worked at Progressive Savings and Loan
in Beverly Hills. He was a Senior Vice President and Assistant To
The President.
